Cardinals & Diamondbacks avoid elimination & force Game 5

David Freese, shut down by Phillies aces the first three games, became a hometown star Wednesday night. He homered, doubled and drove in four runs as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated his nemesis, Roy Oswalt and forced a deciding fifth game in their NL playoff series by beating Philadelphia, 5-3. Now it’s back to Philly for Game 5 on Friday night. Roy Halladay, who won the opener for the Phillies, will face St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter, who he played together with in Toronto for five years.

Ryan Roberts hit a grand slam homerun and Chris Young had the first two-homerun game in Arizona’s postseason history as the Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-6 Wednesday night to force Game 5 in the NL division series. The D-Backs became the second team—with the 1977 Dodgers—to hit grand slams in consecutive playoff games. Arizona evened the series at two and sent it back to Milwaukee for the decisive game Friday. It will be a rematch of Game 1 between 21-game winner Ian Kennedy of the Diamondbacks and fellow right-hander Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers.
