Jackson helps Tigers beat Boston on Opening Day, 3-2

Pitching was key for both teams, but on Opening Day in Detroit, the Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox in the 9th inning, 3-2, thanks to Austin Jackson's bases-loaded hit. With the game time temperature at 43 degrees, a record-setting Comerica Park crowd of 45,027 witnessed Detroit's starter Justin Verlander pitch eight scoreless innings, allowing only two hits with seven strikeouts, but received a no decision due to the Red Sox tying the game at two off of closer Jose Valverde, whose save streak ended after a year & a half.

Austin Jackson changing his batting stance in the off season did paid off with the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Valverde got the victory pitching the ninth inning. Both have the day off on Friday and righty Doug Fister pitches for the Tigers against Boston's Josh Beckett this Saturday afternoon.
