The Detroit Tigers continued their chase to make the postseason by defeating the Oakland Athletics for the second straight game Wednesday night 6-2. Omar Infante started off the scoring with a two-run double in the third inning, and Delmon Young drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put the Tigers up 3-0. Jhonny Peralta chipped in with a RBI single in the fifth, and Miguel Cabrera continued his MVP chase hitting his 41st homer of the year. Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings, giving up just five hits and three walks while striking out five. Octavio Dotel was perfect in the seventh striking out two. Joaquin Benoit struck out two in the eighth. Jose Valverde entered the game in the ninth inning appearing in a non-save situation with a 6-0 lead. With two outs, the A's scored two runs causing the home-town crowd to show their displeasure. Valverde settled down and struck out Seth Smith to record his 31st save of the season. The Royals helped out defeating the White Sox 3-0 cutting Chicago's lead to just two games in the AL Central with 14 games to play.
Detroit hopes to sweep the series on Thursday when they send Anibal Sanchez (8-12, 4.02) to the mound to face Tommy Milone (13-10, 3.81).
