Jose Valverde earned his first save in his first appearance of the season, and Victor Martinez drove in two runs to lead the Tigers on to victory as they defeated the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park Wednesday night 7-5. Max Scherzer struggled, allowing five runs in five innings, but the Tiger bullpen would hold on, ending with Valverde's perfect ninth. Kansas City scored four in the third and one in the fifth, but that would be all. Detroit scored one in the second, two in the third, and four in the fourth, to edge out the streaking Royals 7-5. Detroit hopes to take game two of the series on Thursday when they send Justin Verlander (2-2) to the mound to face James Shields (1-2) for a 1:08 start.
