Max Scherzer remained undefeated on the year winning his ninth game of the season, leading the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over Kansas City on Tuesday night. Scherzer pitched seven innings allowing two runs on just three hits, while striking out six Royals. Detroit started the scoring in the second inning when Don Kelly singled in Victor Martinez to go up 1-0. The Tigers scored again in the fifth on a fielder's choice, scoring Omar Infante. Kansas City tied the game at 2 in their half of the fifth inning when David Lough homered to right field, and Alcides Escobar singled in Mike Moustakas. Detroit took the lead in the eighth inning when Miguel Cabrera scored on a sacrifice fly by Victor Martinez. The Tiger bullpen was able to hold on, as Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jose Valverde escaped in the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Detroit hopes to win the series on Wednesday afternoon when they send their ace Justin Verlander (8-4, 3.71) to face James Shields (2-6, 2.81) for a 2:10 start.
