Trailing by four to start the 9th inning, the Detroit Tigers scored only once as they lost to the Chicago White Sox, 6-3, in their regular-season finale at Comerica Park. The Tigers had a chance to clinch the AL Central Division, but the 2nd-place Cleveland Indians beat Houston, 9-2, to trim Detroit's division lead to five games, and thus, the magic number remains at 2.

Alex Avila went 3-for-3 for the Tigers and scored on Austin Jackson’s sacrifice fly in the 7th inning. Tigers starter pitcher Anibal Sanchez (14-7) suffered his first loss since a 1-0 defeat at Kansas City back on July 19th.

With Cleveland having the day off, The Tigers will begin a three-game series in Minnesota, starting this Monday night at 8 pm, and can move one step (number) closer to the AL Central title.

With two homeruns by Andrelton Simmons, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Chicago Cubs, 5-2, the become the 2013 National League East Division Champions. It actually became official in the middle of their game in the 6th inning when Washington lost, 4-2, to Miami, giving the Braves their first division championship in eight years.

Former Cleveland Indian Coco Crisp hit a three-run homerun and Daric Barton & Jed Lowrie each had a solo shot as the Oakland Athletics overpowered Minnesota, 11-7, to become the 2013 American League West Division Champions for the 2nd straight year.

MAGIC NUMBERS AROUND THE LEAGUE

NL WILD CARD - Cincinnati & Pittsburgh down to 2 after Reds win & Washington losing to Miami earlier
NL CENTRAL - St. Louis remains at 5 after losing to Milwaukee & Cincinnati defeating Pittsburgh
AL WILD CARD - Tampa Bay & Cleveland down to 6 after wins & Texas being shut out by Kansas City
