REMEMBERING THE LATE & GREAT SPARKY ANDERSON

Post  Admin on Sat Jun 25, 2011 2:14 pm

A legend highly recognized in the city of Detroit, George "Sparky" Anderson gave us all a reason to celebrate, especially in 1984 when he guided the Detroit Tigers to a World Series championship against the San Diego Padres. He also managed the National League's Cincinnati Reds to the 1975 & 1976 championships, becoming the first manager to win the World Series in both leagues. His 2,194 career wins are the sixth most for a manager in Major League Baseball history. As the manager of the Tigers, he was named American League Manager of the Year in 1984 and 1987. In the year 2000, Sparky Anderson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sparky Anderson retired from managing on October 2, 1995. However, Sparky remained in Detroit to run the charitable organization CATCH (Caring Athletes Teamed for Children's and Henry Ford hospitals) he founded in 1987. He continued to support and participate in the charity well into his retirement.

Although November 4, 2010 was a sad day for all Tiger fans when we lost Sparky at the age of 76, he will always be loved & remembered for years to come. On Sunday, June 26th at Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers organization will have a retirement ceremony in honor of the late & great George "Sparky" Anderson.
